(MPI) - During a reception for President of the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) of the US Jason Oxman in Hanoi on June 18, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Duy Dong informed the guest about Vietnam development priorities and cooperation orientations in the fields of science and technology, innovation, building a sustainable supply chain, and the country’s investment and business environment.

Deputy Minister Dong highlighted the fruitful development of the Vietnam-US relationship, especially the upgrade of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership on the occasion of US President Joe Biden’s visit to Vietnam in 2023. The two sides agreed to strengthen science, technology, and innovation cooperation, with a focus on developing semiconductor ecosystem.

Vietnam identifies science, technology and innovation as the top national policy and a strategic breakthrough in the new period. The country prioritises attracting investment to develop the semiconductor ecosystem and artificial intelligence (AI), drawing the attention of many large US businesses to visit Vietnam and affirm to invest in the country.

Regarding investment attraction, the deputy minister stated that Vietnam continues to prioritise attracting investment in the fields of science, technology and innovation. The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) is building a Draft decree on Investment support fund to encourage and attract strategic investors, multinational corporations, and support domestic enterprises in certain fields that need investment encouragement; prioritising projects with advanced technology, new technology, high technology, clean technology, modern management, high added value, environmentally friendly, with widespread impact, connecting the global production and supply chain.

Regarding the priorities and focus on developing the semiconductor industry, Vietnam is focusing on building, completing, and issuing the national strategy on semiconductors and the “human resource development in semiconductor industry by 2030, with a vision to 2045” project, aiming train 50,000 engineers for this industry. The country is currently training first, then implementing new training, initially focusing on training human resources for chip design, packaging, and testing.

The deputy minister proposed that the ITI research cooperation with the National Innovation Center (NIC) for training, incubation, research, and development in cybersecurity and other information technology fields.

ITI President Jason Oxman expressed confidence that the recent upgraded of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will significantly contribute to enhancing investment cooperation opportunities in the near future.

Oxman also expressed his impression of Vietnam's investment attraction priorities in general, and for the fields of science and technology, the semiconductor industry, and digital transformation in particular. He also stated that the ITI will provide information and resources for member companies to continue researching and making cooperation decisions in innovation, building a sustainable supply chain; and expressed his hope for continued coordination in mutually interested fields, including science and technology, digital transformation, and developing the semiconductor industry ecosystem./.
