JBIC Managing Director highly valued the achievements that Vietnam has achieved over the past time, with effective policies to control COVID-19 and ensure economic development. He lauded commitments and actions by Vietnam regarding environment-related issues.

Maeda hailed Vietnam’s participation during the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting in Tokyo in early March with strong commitments in climate change response and greenhouse gas emission reduction. The AZEC is proposed by Japanese Prime Minister to accelerate energy transition, carbon neutrality and sustainable development in Asian nations.

Asia and the Southeast Asia, including Vietnam play an important role in partnership and coordination and with the Group of Seven (G7) countries under the Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP) to realise the goals of carbon neutrality and energy conversion from coal to clean and renewable energy, he noted.

Maeda affirmed Vietnam is a key partner of Japan in implementing cooperation strategies on climate change adaptation to realise the idea of building a “Asia zero emission community” with specific plans and projects.

Agreeing with the guest, Minister Dung said Vietnam has drastically realised its commitments at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) with numerous activities.

According to Minister Dung, as a developing country with high needs for production, Vietnam sees difficulties in achieving net-zero emissions target by 2050 like developed countries.

The Vietnamese Minister of Planning and Investment asked for JBIC’s help in policy consultations, resources and technology for Vietnam to speed up energy transition and develop renewable energy industry; and developing a most feasible roadmap to ensure both economic development goals and carbon neutrality and energy transition.

He also asked Japan and the JBIC support Vietnam in reaching net-zero emission in 2050 through existing cooperation mechanisms such as the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative and implementing effectively the AZEC and the Asia energy transition Initiative.

Vietnam always encourages Japanese enterprises to invest in new fields with energy transition to realise the goals climate change response by 2050.

Minister Dung expressed his hope that with the bilateral extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia, especially 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Vietnam and Japan will open new and special cooperation opportunities./.
